Panama to Alaska Reports

25th June 2008    Another Day in a DB3

Sourtoes and Tinkling Ivories.

Needing little encouragement after the 8.30 cabaret at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s cabaret and casino on the evening of the 24th, an intrepid group of ralliers made their way to a local saloon.  It was not long before most of them had tried the local Sourtoe Cocktail which comprised a neat whiskey poured over a pickled human toe.  They’ve all survived to tell the tale but the thought of it makes the writer feel rather queasy!

There happened to be a piano in the corner of the saloon which gave Roger Carey the chance to vamp away.  The session started with The House of the Rising Sun and developed rapidly peaking with a rousing session of the Banana Boat Song led by Dave Hughes .  The revelry continued with great enthusiasm and it was not until 11.45pm that the party broke up.  A small group then fell into Gerties for the final 12.00 midnight cabaret, making their way somewhat unsteadily back to the hotel at 1.15am in the land of the midnight sun.

We left Dawson City early the following morning. The Careys enjoying their new Plexiglass windscreen replacement following their shattering experience 3 days earlier on the road to Grande Prairie.  The route to the next destination at Tok involved crossing the Klondyke river by ferry, which for some involved a delay of several hours because so many huge RV’s were seeking to cross at the same time. After they had got across, three couples played nine holes of golf at the Top of the World golf course. The course is covered in snow for 9 months of the year so was not in peak condition but the views were outstanding and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The journey to Tok was by the Top of the World Highway, truly one of the great highways of the world. The gravelled road was very dusty in places and had also been watered in part which turned the dust to mud.  The effect after a hundred miles or so was to change the colours of all the cars to two- tone mud and paint.

We stopped at Chicken for soup (No prizes for guessing the ingredients) and refreshments.   There was very little to see at Chicken yet the Strassers managed to pass 4 hour hours waiting for Paul to arrive to attend to a leaking clutch – it took him just 7 minutes to get him back on the road!!!   (Oh that we had just a fraction of his mechanical ability!)   All arrived in Tok in time to return their rally cars  to their original colour schemes before coming  together to celebrate Jenny Woodhead’s birthday after which they repaired to various hostelries for dinner bringing a pleasant end to a long and enjoyable day.
